This is true for the principal as well as any teacher. Good teachers need to know all of the fundamentals of effective leadership and practice them on a daily basis. The principal must be able to do this.

Many principals have heard about the five practices that are associated with leadership. These are listening, taking action, making a commitment, implementing a plan and caring. If a principal wants to learn how to be an effective leader in his/her classroom, he/she must take the time to understand how these five practices fit into their daily practice. Having an understanding of the five practices will help them to be an effective leader in their class.

One of the biggest benefits of leadership practices is that they provide instructional helpfulness for teachers. In order to teach effectively, it is necessary for teachers to know what they are talking about. When the information is available from other sources, such as a book, there is less need for teachers to re-invent the wheel. A simple reference book will accomplish this. In addition to providing instructional helpfulness, this also provides a mechanism for teachers to communicate information they already know. This type of instruction is important for teachers in the classroom.

Another benefit of classroom instruction is that it provides an opportunity for principals and teachers to identify with students. It allows teachers to become more personally involved in their students’ lives. When teachers are more closely connected with the lives of their students, it allows them to better provide them with direction. Since student achievement is dependent on teachers who are personally invested in their students, it is important for teachers to understand the importance of classroom instructional leadership practices. This will allow them to provide student achievement reinforcement and have greater influence over the behaviors of their students.
